The Shatun in METRO 2039

A name, a function, not a spreadsheet

On 7 June 2026, at the Xbox Games Showcase, 4A premiered nearly three minutes of in-engine footage and used that video to talk about the Shatun. The studio listed it beside new mutant variants and new ways to use the environment. We still do not have a magazine size, a craft cost, or a slot on a retail loadout screen. We have a silhouette and a job: feel like Metro, not like a generic assault-rifle skin.

Ukrainian coverage from UNN after gamescom 2026 is blunter about the type: a pneumatic rifle, one of the major new additions to the arsenal. That matches series history more than a modern kinetic platform. Metro guns are filed together in workshops. Pressure, scavenged pipes, and a round you might have to craft from metal sit closer to a Helsing than to a mall SPAS. Until 4A posts a inspect screen, treat “pneumatic” as the honest category and ignore fan wikis that invent joules.

The weapons hub keeps the rest of the camera log: double-barrel shotguns from IGN’s dungeon interiors, throwing knives that return, iron sights instead of a floating reticle. The Shatun is the headline because it is new. It is not the whole kit. If you only bring one tool into a stealth den, previewers still reached for the knife.

How it sits in a real fight

Hunter trailer shots put the Shatun in close, claustrophobic spaces — tunnels, station guts, the kind of room where a long optic is a joke. That is consistent with 4A saying the return to Moscow means denser geometry than Exodus’ outdoors. Read tunnels for the geography. Stay here for the implication: a signature rifle that still has to work in a corridor you can choke with a shotgun.

Attachments are real and granular in preview builds. IGN stacked scopes, hilts and muzzles on other guns at benches and on the backpack. There is no published Shatun tree. Assume it drinks from the same two resource pails as everything else — metal and chemicals for standard crafts, rarer parts for the pretty bits — and budget it like items, not like a prestige skin.

Ammo types matter. IGN listed metal balls, incendiary rounds and armor-piercing machine-gun rounds as craftable or findable. 4A told interviewers that weapons and ammo are more or less effective depending on the target. Do not dump AP into unarmored mutants just because the Shatun looks special. Do not throw fire into a room you still need to loot for filters.

What we will not invent

No DPS column. No “best Shatun build.” No leaked stat block from a 2022 build dressed up as 2027 patch notes. When a retail inspect screen exists, this page grows a table. Until then, the honest version is: confirmed name, confirmed firing in the Hunter reel, reported as a pneumatic rifle after gamescom, used in the same diegetic loop as the watch, the mask and the backpack.
