A living Metro station hub where METRO 2039 preview sessions begin

How to Play METRO 2039

METRO 2039 plays like a survival shooter that is allergic to UI. If you treat it like a modern cover shooter with a giant objective marker, the Metro will starve you. This page is the on-ramp: what a session looks like, what the game expects you to look at, and which habits to install before February 2027.

The loop: station, job, hatch, haul back

Xbox Wire’s session started in an administrator’s office inside a station settlement. A local bandit problem, a name — Kaban — and a handshake of mutual interest because Kaban serves Hunter. That is the campaign grammar. Hubs are not menus. They are rooms full of NPCs who look up when you pass, children playing at war, shopkeepers, and a logbook where you save by marking an X before you leave.

Once you take the job, you walk the settlement, then you leave the lights. Tunnels and surface streets are where survival and combat take over. When you return, you spend what you hauled. 4A has not published a skill tree. Progression that previewed in public is gear and blueprints, not XP bars. Read crafting as your growth system until a retail patch says otherwise.

New players asked whether they must finish Exodus. Official copy says no: new lead, new cast, a fair entry. Veterans should still skim Hunter so the posters in the hub mean something. Everyone should open Sevastopolskaya after this page; that station is the first named hub in the Renegade trailer.

Look at the world, not a compass rose

Previewers keep listing the same diegetic tricks because they are the game. Remaining filter time lives on a digital watch; IGN had to lift the gun with Y on keyboard to read it. The map is a physical folio you pull out, with objectives handwritten on the reverse — no laser waypoint. Inventory is a backpack you set on a table or the ground. There is no floating crosshair. Sights are iron or crafted optics. Light is both a tool and a snitch.

Play that honestly. Before you sprint into a dark stair, check the watch. Before you commit to a street, flip the folio. Before you craft in a panic, confirm the floor is dry; IGN watched a sewer boss trap a player who could not set the pack down. Those are not flavour animations. They are the rules.

First-hour habits that keep you alive

Move slower than your ego wants. Xbox Wire described learning, after several deaths, that the surface is a prey fantasy: nosalis-scale moles hunting in groups, and the correct answer is often to not take the fight. That lesson belongs with combat, but it starts here as a playstyle. METRO 2039 is not a checklist of things to kill.

Loot like a pharmacist, not a completionist. Preview loot is filters, medkits, ammo and the two craft streams — metal and chemicals — plus rarer attachment parts. A ruined drugstore was IGN’s first instinct on the surface, and it is the right instinct. Empty cabinets are still cheaper than a magazine dumped into a pack you could have walked around.

Use the filter timer while you watch the showcase above. Five minutes feels longer on a page than in a burning street. Pair that with the controls sheet so the watch check, lighter and mask are not a settings scramble on day one. If you want the kit names behind those habits, jump to equipment and items.

  • Accept the job in a station office, then walk the hub before you rush the hatch.
  • Save at the logbook. Do not assume a mid-street autosave until 4A confirms one.
  • Read the watch before every long room. Craft on dry ground.
  • Treat light as a tell. Burn cobwebs with the lighter, then kill the flame.
  • Leave mutant families alone unless the path is blocked.

What this page will not pretend to know

Difficulty names, New Game Plus, accessibility sliders, exact Ranger Hardcore rules, and a full keybind table from 4A are unpublished. Steam lists full controller support, DualShock and DualSense USB flags, but not the face-button map. Until the February 2027 manual exists, the controls page is labelled as series convention plus preview keys.

If you came here for “how to beat Hunter,” stop. Hunter is the antagonist of a game that has not shipped. What you can do is learn the Metro’s grammar so the first station does not humiliate you. For the man on the posters, use the Hunter dossier. For the streets above the hatch, use the surface notes.

Frequently asked questions

+ Does METRO 2039 have a waypoint marker?

Preview builds used a handheld folio without a firm laser pin. You get a direction, not a GPS. See map notes.

+ How do I save?

Xbox Wire saved by marking an X in a logbook at the settlement exit. Mid-mission save rules are not fully documented.

+ Is there a tutorial that explains the watch?

Coverage says the game throws you in. Learn the watch on survival and rehearse it with the filter timer.

+ Can I play METRO 2039 without prior Metro games?

Yes, according to the official FAQ. Lore pages here exist so the posters still make sense.
