Mutants in METRO 2039
Official FAQ copy says new dangers lurk above and below a thawing, still irradiated surface. Preview sessions put a body on that sentence: bear-sized moles that hunt as a family, a nine-foot thing in a sewer, armored hides that care which round you spent. This page is a bestiary of what has been shown, not a leak of what a datamine named.
Packs, not trophies
Xbox Wire’s first surface lesson was biological. Bear-sized moles — nosalises to anyone who played 2033 — stalked the crossing to a bandit hideout. Shooting the first summoned the rest. The correct skill was prey-animal awareness. Writers compared that solo tension to extraction shooters, achieved here in a single-player campaign. Combat is the doctrine: walk around the family if the folio allows it.
4A’s Hunter trailer copy teases new mutant variants without posting a poster. IGN described a nine-foot mutant in a sewer. Developer comments add that mutants can be armored and that ammunition types matter against those hides. That is why items bother to separate incendiary and AP from metal balls. Do not dump your special stack into the first silhouette because it looked like a 2033 screenshot.
The teaser in the middle of this article is short on purpose. Watch the shapes in the dark, not a YouTuber’s fake health bar. 4A is selling weight and panic, not a hunter’s journal with stars. When a retail bestiary exists, this page grows names. Until then, the honest version is behaviour: family, armour, punishment for the first loud opener.
Where they live
The surface is the classroom. Thaw has started. Radiation has not clocked out. Official FAQ: deadlier than ever, new dangers above and below. Streets hold pharmacies worth stripping and families that will strip you if you announce yourself with a flashlight and a hero complex. Survival is mandatory reading before you treat a boulevard as a vista.
Tunnels are not safe simply because they have a ceiling. Horror interiors, sewers, wet connectors — IGN’s sewer mutant is a tunnel problem. UV and light discipline still matter. A school room in Xbox Wire’s slice was not a mutant arena; it was a reading test. Do not enter every black doorway as if it were a nest. Some of them are Frozen Stories. Some of them bite.
How humans use the monsters
Hunter’s training films treat darkness as an enemy you can shoot into submission. Dark Ones appear as a slur to keep people scared. That is Novoreich politics, not a bestiary entry. Do not assume the campaign agrees with him. Assume the propaganda is part of the level art, then decide whether the thing in the alley is a family you can walk around.
Human dens and mutant dens use different grammars. Knives and stealth own a bandit house. Walking around owns a mole street. Mixing them is how previewers died. Stealth and this page should stay in two browser tabs if you are rehearsing the first hour with how to play.

Frequently asked questions
+ Are nosalises confirmed by name?
Xbox Wire described bear-sized moles as series nosalises. Exact retail UI names may differ. We keep the behaviour either way.
+ Can I farm mutants for parts like in Exodus?
Xbox Wire got punished for that instinct. Families hunt back. See versus Exodus.
+ Do filters matter in a mutant fight?
Always. A pack fight on the surface is a filter bill. Rehearse with the timer.
+ Is there a mutant boss list?
No. Anyone posting one before March 2027 is guessing. We will not.
