METRO 2039 vs Metro Exodus
Exodus took Rangers into the country and let the Aurora be a home. METRO 2039 takes a different man back into Moscow and lets the Metro be a regime. If you load 2039 with Exodus habits, some of them will save you and some of them will get you swarmed. This page splits those habits.
What you can keep
The watch. The mask. The lighter. The idea that light is a tell. The idea that ammo is rent. The idea that a dressed room is a paragraph. Those are Metro, not Exodus-only, and 2039 doubles down so hard that previewers without series history still learned them in two hours. Your survival instincts are welcome.
Gun feel. Handmade weapons, attachments, a shotgun that owns a corridor. IGN’s double-barrel is an Exodus cousin. Weapons will feel like a dialect, not a new language. Throwing knives paying for themselves is the kind of economy Exodus players already respect.
Moral attention. You still read notes. You still decide whether a room is a slaughter. 4A has not advertised a binary ending meter in 2039, and we will not invent one, but the Frozen Stories pitch is the same authorial tic that made Exodus’ camps hurt when you rushed them.
What you should unlearn
The Aurora as a living room. There is no confirmed train hub. Hubs are stations under Novoreich posters, like Sevastopolskaya. You do not come home to a samovar between chapters in any footage we have. You come home to occupation.
Open-map swagger. Exodus’ outdoor maps taught people to hunt every mutant for parts. Xbox Wire got punished for that on the first 2039 street. Families hunt back. Combat is prey logic. The surface is not a Caspian sandbox.
Silent Artyom. The Stranger talks. Conversations are performances. If you skip VO like it is flavour text, you skip the new lead. Read The Stranger. Hunter is also not a side-memory; he is the wall. Read Hunter.
Story geometry
Exodus is 2035 on the calendar most wikis use. 2039 is four years later in Moscow. Artyom’s ending is not the tutorial. Official copy says you can start here. The connective tissue is thematic: Sparta’s myth, Dark Ones as a political object, the surface as a lie. Glukhovsky is involved again. It is still not “play the novel.”
Technically, Exodus Enhanced already required a look at RT. 2039’s renderer is described as fully ray-traced. If you played 2019 Exodus on a toaster, you are not pre-qualified for 2027. Platforms is the cold shower.
- Keep — mask, watch, loot-reading, ammo humility.
- Drop — Aurora as home, mutant-hunting as default, silent-protagonist skip.
- New — voiced lead, fascist Metro, folio without a pin, backpack-on-the-floor crafts.
- Unknown — ending structure, exact length, DLC shape.
A veteran’s first hour
Walk the hub slower than you think you need to. Talk. Craft attachments you will use, not a trophy stock. Mark the logbook. On the street, count to ten before you fire at a silhouette. Check the watch like it is a reload. If that sounds like how to play, good. Exodus mastery is not 2039 mastery. It is a head start you can still waste.

Frequently asked questions
+ Is METRO 2039 a direct sequel?
It is the next mainline game, set later in the same world, with a new lead. It is not “Artyom chapter four” in official materials.
+ Will my Exodus saves matter?
No import has been shown.
+ Is it more linear than Exodus?
4A said the return to the Metro means denser, more confined spaces than Exodus’ outdoors, with surface pockets. Previews support that mix.
+ Should Exodus players skip the survival guide?
No. The backpack-on-water rule and family-pack hunting are 2039-specific ways to die. Read survival anyway.
