METRO 2039 Wiki

The year is 2039. Moscow’s Metro is no longer a patchwork of rival stations. It is a regime. This wiki tracks what 4A Games has actually shown, then turns those details into practical pages for players who want to survive the tunnels instead of guessing at them.

A darker Metro, told from a Ukrainian studio

METRO 2039 is the next mainline first-person shooter from 4A Games, the Kyiv-founded studio that built Metro 2033, Metro: Last Light and Metro Exodus on its own 4A Engine. Deep Silver publishes. The game returns the series to post-nuclear Moscow four years after Exodus and follows a new voiced protagonist known only as The Stranger. Official materials describe a claustrophobic, story-driven campaign that mixes exploration, stealth, survival and close-range violence rather than a multiplayer sandbox.

The fiction is original to 4A, written in collaboration with novelist Dmitry Glukhovsky. It is not an adaptation of a single Metro book. That matters for searchers who type “Metro 2039 book” and expect a novel-to-game map. Read the story of The Stranger, the Hunter dossier and the Novoreich primer before you assume this is Artyom’s next chapter. 4A has also said the invasion of Ukraine reshaped the project: the theme is no longer only “prevent a war,” it is the cost of silence, tyranny and the price of a future.

Hands-on coverage from gamescom 2026 is consistent on one point. METRO 2039 does not hold your hand. There is no comforting minimap pin. Filters still tick on a watch you have to look at. Inventory means putting a backpack on the floor. If you want a rehearsal for that pressure, start with how to play METRO 2039 and keep the filter timer open in another tab.

Gear

Makeshift guns, a ticking watch, a hungry mask

The Hunter gameplay reel showed the Shatun firing in anger. Preview writers came back talking about double-barrel shotguns, iron sights instead of a floating reticle, and a bracer that is compass, Geiger and countdown at once. Gear pages stay with confirmed kit, not wishlist fan-fiction.

Lore

The Spartan who became a Fuhrer

Hunter is not a new name to Metro veterans. In 2039 he wears a perverted Spartan uniform and runs the Novoreich, a single banner over stations that used to fight each other. The Stranger is a recluse pulled back into a city he swore off. These pages separate trailer poetry from series history.

World

Stations that still breathe, streets that do not

Sevastopolskaya is the first named hub of the new campaign: a shelter drowning in Fuhrer posters. Above it, thawing but still irradiated Moscow. 4A calls the set dressing Frozen Stories — objects placed as if someone just left, or never left. The map pages are a field notebook, not a spoiler atlas.

Release

February 2027, four storefronts, one helmet

The window tightened from “winter” to February 2027 after the Hunter gameplay trailer. Xbox Play Anywhere is confirmed. Steam, Epic, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series launch together. The Collector’s Edition is a limited, full-scale replica of The Stranger’s Spartan helmet. Price and full contents are still unlisted.

Review

Preview consensus, not a review score

The game is unreleased. Scores do not exist yet. What does exist is a tight cluster of gamescom hands-ons: IGN, Xbox Wire, Screen Rant, Metro, Gamereactor. They agree on tension, craft, and a refusal to soften the series. Our preview desk is a reading of those sessions, not a fake 9/10.

Tools

Rehearse the watch before February

A filter that dies in a boss puddle is not a lore problem, it is a planning problem. The timer on this wiki copies the series watch so you can feel five minutes in your hands. The controls page maps Exodus muscle memory onto what preview writers actually pressed.

Frequently asked questions

+ When does METRO 2039 come out?

Deep Silver and 4A Games have locked the launch window to February 2027 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series and PC. An exact day inside February has not been published. Track the release date page as storefronts update.

+ Do I need to play Metro Exodus first?

Official FAQ copy says METRO 2039 is a fair jumping-on point: new lead, new supporting cast. Legacy players will catch extra weight around Hunter and Sparta. If you want the connective tissue, read METRO 2039 vs Exodus.

+ Is METRO 2039 based on a Glukhovsky novel titled 2039?

No. The game is an original 4A story written with Glukhovsky’s involvement. It is inspired by the Metro books, not mapped chapter-for-chapter from one of them. Start with The Stranger rather than a novel wiki.

+ Which languages are confirmed?

Steam currently lists full English interface, audio and subtitles. 4A has separately talked about Ukrainian support. Russian is listed as not supported. Other localizations remain unconfirmed on the store page, which is why this wiki ships English plus German, French and Spanish editorial translations.

+ Is there a Collector’s Edition?

Yes. The confirmed centerpiece is a wearable, full-scale replica of The Stranger’s Spartan helmet, built from the in-game model. Pre-orders open later in 2026 in limited numbers. Full box contents and price are still TBA on the editions page.
