METRO 2039 Survival Guide
The Metro does not kill most Rangers with a boss bar. It kills them with a filter that hit zero in a room they could have left. Survival in METRO 2039 is a set of small, physical chores: look at the watch, change the canister, kill the flashlight, put the pack down on dry ground. This page is that chore list.
The watch is not flavour
Every recent Metro puts remaining air on a wrist display. METRO 2039 keeps that contract and makes it ruder. IGN had to press Y to tilt the weapon and read the digits. Xbox Wire heard menacing beeps as the canister ran down. The Hunter reel and the escalator screenshot both show a yellow-green countdown in the lower left of the world, not in a pause menu.
Build a tick: enter a space, glance, decide if the room is a one-filter job. If it is not, craft or swap before the midpoint, not at the last beep. The filter timer on this wiki is a five-minute Ranger-style rehearsal because 4A has not published the 2039 duration. Use it as a muscle, then throw the number away when the retail HUD exists.
Filters are crafted from the chemical stream and found in pharmacies, lockers and corpses. They compete with ammo and medkits for the same scavenger minutes. That economy is why items and crafting sit next to this page instead of in a separate “loot tier list.”
Surface thaw is not safety
Official copy is blunt: the surface is deadlier than ever, thawing and still irradiated, with new threats above and below. Preview players stepped out of a guarded station into streets stalked by bear-sized moles — nosalises to series fans — and learned that shooting the first one summons the family. Survival here is route choice. See surface Moscow for the geography; stay here for the air.
Radiation is audio as well as numbers. Gamereactor mentioned Geiger chatter on the bracer. If the click accelerates, you are not “a little dirty,” you are on a timer inside a timer. Mask on, filter fresh, path short. Do not photograph the scenery with the flashlight raised. Light is a flare.
Small tools that prevent stupid deaths
The lighter burns cobwebs so you can see and move. It also announces you. Xbox Wire liked the tactile beat; they also noted that a window takes multiple butt-strokes before it breaks. METRO 2039 wants you to feel glass, not skip it with a prompt. That same philosophy shows up in the UV lamp: IGN followed writing that only appeared under purple light. If a room feels empty, paint it. Secrets in this series are usually ammo you will beg for later.
Helmet and mask are not cosmetics. The Collector’s replica is The Stranger’s Spartan helmet with integrated gas-mask parts, hinged visor, scratches and personal mods. In play, that object is your lung. Keep a spare canister in the pack. The equipment page names the bracer’s jobs: countdown, compass, Geiger. The controls page guesses the keys from Exodus plus the preview Y-to-watch bind.
Settlement air is the only confirmed “safe” lung. IGN could not die in Sevastopolskaya’s NPC streets. The moment you shoulder the pack and leave, the contract ends. Save at the logbook. Craft on a bench if you have one. Then go. For the station itself, Sevastopolskaya is the hub explainer.
- Check the watch at every threshold, not only when it beeps.
- Craft filters on dry ground before a surface crossing, not during it.
- Flashlight off when you hear human voices or pack movement.
- UV-scan rooms that look “done.” 4A hides crafts in Frozen Stories.
- Never stand in a sewer and assume you can open the backpack.
Horror rooms and the urge to sprint
Xbox Wire walked a haunted school of ghost children, notes, animal masks and a candle order puzzle. That slice is a reminder that METRO 2039 is allowed to stop being a shooter. Survival there is reading, not spraying. If you dump your last AP rounds into a hallucination, the next real mutant will collect you.
The Hunter footage in the video above is useful as a mood board: wildlands, irradiated streets, station communities, tunnel depths. Watch it once for spectacle, then again for how long the gun stays lowered. A Ranger who lives in 2039 is a Ranger who spends most of a minute not firing. When you do fire, combat is the page that tells you which fights are a tax.

Frequently asked questions
+ How long does a METRO 2039 filter last?
Not officially published. Series Ranger filters were often around five minutes. Use the timer as practice, then trust the watch in the retail build.
+ Do I need the gas mask underground?
Stations can be breathable. Tunnels and surface crossings in prior games and in 2039 previews are not. Default to mask-on outside a hub.
+ What happens when a filter hits zero?
In Metro tradition you choke and die. Preview beeps exist to stop that. Do not test it on a street with nosalises.
+ Can I craft filters anywhere?
You must set the backpack down. Standing water blocked IGN from crafting during a miniboss. Plan around terrain; see crafting.
