METRO 2039 Preview Roundup
There is no METRO 2039 review score because there is no METRO 2039. What exists is a cluster of two-to-four-hour hands-ons that agree more than gamescom usually allows. This desk is a reading of those sessions, plus a sibling page for Exodus veterans who need to unlearn a train.
Where the previews agree
Tension first. IGN, Xbox Wire, Screen Rant and Metro all came back talking about a game that refuses to hold your hand. No laser waypoint. Watch as HUD. Backpack as inventory. Iron sights. Filters as a real threat. That consensus is why our how to play and survival pages exist as practical notes rather than as hype.
Craft second. Xbox Wire liked the two-resource simplification. IGN liked attachments and hated wet floors. Wccftech’s interview added blueprints as authored objects. Together they describe a progression system you can feel in the hands, which is the crafting page in preview form.
Tone third. 4A is not pretending the last few years did not happen. Xbox Wire compared Hunter’s film to Wolfenstein’s blunt antifascism and noted the studio’s openness about Ukraine. Metro called it the grimmest post-apocalypse with a faint glimmer. Glukhovsky called it darker than anything before. If you want a goofy looter, this is the wrong series. If you want Novoreich to feel like a warning, the previews say it does.
Where they differ, or just did not play the same hour
Xbox Wire’s slice was light on story, heavy on a bandit job and a haunted school. IGN talked UV puzzles and a nine-foot mutant in a sewer. Screen Rant stressed visual fidelity on a high-end PC stream. Gamereactor lingered on the bracer. None of that is contradiction. It is a demo with rooms. A wiki that flattens them into one “review” would be lying about structure.
Nobody posted a 9/10. Nobody posted a campaign length. Nobody posted a boss list. Treat any aggregator score as spam. The late-August booth cluster — Metro, Eurogamer, PC Gamer, Gamereactor — lives on the hands-on page so this hub does not flatten two demo waves into one. When March 2027 reviews exist, this page will link them and keep the preview notes underneath so launch recency bias does not erase what the first players actually struggled with.
Is it a jumping-on point?
Official FAQ: yes. Xbox Wire, coming in cold, agreed the high concept carries you. Hunter still lands harder if you remember Sparta; that is a bonus, not a lock. Our versus Exodus page is for people who already have the muscle memory. New players should start at The Stranger and guides.
Technical caution: Screen Rant and 4A interviews describe a look that assumes serious hardware. Preview PCs were not your uncle’s GTX. Read platforms before you write a love letter to a 2018 laptop. A beautiful preview can still be a brick on day one if the RT bar is real.
How we will handle launch week
No bought scores. No “9.5 stealth” nonsense. We will quote a range of outlets, keep this preview layer, and send mechanical updates into the guides. If a reviewer hates the watch, that belongs next to the filter timer as a taste note, not as a reason to delete the system. If a reviewer finds a waypoint toggle, map notes will change that day.

Frequently asked questions
+ What is the METRO 2039 Metacritic?
It does not exist yet. Anyone posting a score is early or fake.
+ Did reviewers finish the game?
No. Published sessions were two to four hours from mid-campaign slices.
+ Is it scarier than Exodus?
Outlets describe more tunnel horror and at least one explicit ghost-school beat. “Scarier” is taste; “willing to stop being a shooter” is a fair summary.
+ Should I wait for patches?
Always reasonable for a 4A PC launch. The platforms page will note Steam performance talk when it exists.
