A grim METRO 2039 interior from the preview stills circulating at gamescom 2026

METRO 2039 hands-on previews

The first preview cluster landed in April and June. The second cluster landed when people walked out of Hall 9.1. This page is that second cluster: dated, sourced, still not a score. If a thumbnail slaps 9/10 on a booth demo, close it.

What the late-August pieces agree on

Tension first, still. Metro.co.uk’s Nick Gillett (26 August 2026) called it gaming’s grimmest post-apocalypse and still found a faint glimmer of hope after a mature, polished session with five months of development left on the clock. That glimmer is not a happy ending promise. It is a tone note: the booth did not feel like unfinished cruelty. It felt like Metro.

War writing second. Eurogamer’s Dom Peppiatt the same day quoted the studio on living in a state of war for four and a half years, and on a franchise whose nature is getting too close to reality. PC Gamer’s Harvey Randall ran the same interview thread: Ukraine changed how 4A writes morality. This is not a new claim — April already had it — but gamescom is when outlets sat with the people saying it next to a playable build. Read Novoreich and Hunter as political furniture, not as cool armour.

Systems third. The watch, the backpack, the missing waypoint, iron sights, filters as a real threat. Nothing in the late cluster walked that back. Our how to play and survival pages remain the practical notes. Hands-on week added dirt, not a new HUD.

Where they looked instead of looking at the same room

PC Gamer’s Joshua Wolens found delicious Exodus bits still in the mix, then the familiar punishment of wasting gas-mask time on a closet door. That is the versus Exodus warning in one anecdote: the country-game habits will get you billed. Morgan Park, same outlet, looked at the trailer and worried about aging graphics cards. Screen Rant’s earlier high-end PC stream already implied a look that assumes serious hardware. Platforms is required reading, not a footnote.

Gamereactor’s Ben Lyons (26 August) stressed immersion after a hands-on. Screen Rant’s booth piece, circulating the same week, still talked about a bang that does not let up. None of that is contradiction. A demo has rooms. A wiki that flattens them into one “review” would be lying about structure. The older April/June cluster — IGN, Xbox Wire, the school, the sewer mutant, the double-barrel — still stands underneath. This page does not erase it. It dates the second wave.

Frozen Stories still impress every outlet. That remains the closest thing to a universal quote.

What we still will not fake

No campaign length. No boss list. No Metacritic. No “GOTY lock.” When March 2027 reviews exist, the preview hub will link them and keep both preview layers underneath so launch recency bias does not erase what booth players actually struggled with. If a reviewer hates the watch, that belongs next to the filter timer as a taste note. If a reviewer finds a waypoint toggle, map notes change that day.

Age rating in UK coverage sits at 18. Dualshockers relayed Embracer materials with Mature 17+ / intense violence, blood, language. Treat those as regional labels, not as a lore spoiler. The practical player question is still the same: can you live with a diegetic HUD and a game that punishes the first shot at a pack. If yes, start at stealth and mutants. If you need the calendar, date has not moved off February 2027.

  • Agree — tension, diegetic HUD, craft, no hand-holding, war writing is load-bearing.
  • Split — which room they played, how loud the GPU anxiety is, how much Exodus muscle still helps.
  • Absent — scores, runtime, day-one Game Pass, a Tuesday in February.

Frequently asked questions

+ Is this a review score?

No. The game is unreleased. This is a dated reading of gamescom hands-ons.

+ Did anyone change their mind after the booth?

The late cluster did not walk back tension or systems. It added polish notes, war-writing interviews and PC cost anxiety.

+ Should Exodus players skip the new hands-ons?

No. Wolens’ closet-door filter story is exactly the habit you need to unlearn. See versus Exodus.

+ Where is the show recap?
