Collapsed bridges over a poisoned river at dusk in METRO 2039

Surface Moscow in METRO 2039

The regime sells the surface as a future. The previews sell it as a tax. Thaw has started. The air has not forgiven anyone. Streets hold pharmacies worth stripping and families of mutants that will strip you if you announce yourself with a flashlight and a hero complex.

Thaw is not mercy

Official FAQ: the surface is deadlier than ever, thawing and irradiated, with new dangers above and below. That sentence is the design. Snow may recede. Filters do not. Survival is mandatory reading before you treat a boulevard as a vista. The watch will not admire architecture with you.

Xbox Wire’s first surface lesson was biological. Bear-sized moles — nosalises to anyone who played 2033 — stalked the crossing to a bandit hideout. Shooting the first summoned the rest. The correct skill was prey-animal awareness, the kind of solo tension those writers compared to extraction shooters, achieved here in a single-player campaign. Combat is the doctrine: walk around the family if the folio allows it.

IGN’s first instinct was better: a picked-apart drugstore, every corner checked for chemicals, ammo, medkits, filters. That is how you buy a second crossing. Items and crafting are the spreadsheets. The street is the warehouse, and the warehouse bites.

Routes, not arenas

There is no minimap laser through a courtyard. The map folio gives a direction. You pick the alley that has cover, the interior that might hold a dry floor, the window Xbox Wire proved you can beat into a shortcut. Windows take several strikes. That is time. Time is filter. Budget the glass.

Light on the surface is a worse tell than underground because sightlines are longer. Keep the beam down unless you are reading a wall. UV still matters in interiors you duck into. A hotel lobby in preview stills is not a rest zone; it is a dressed box that may hold a craft or a man with a rifle. Equipment lists the tools. This page tells you the tools are always on a clock.

Masked Novoreich patrol on a grey surface street in METRO 2039
The wilderness was exile. The city streets are the job. Neither is clean air.

What the regime cannot advertise away

Novoreich wants a war for this ground. Hunter’s films treat darkness as an enemy you can shoot into submission. The footage shows packs, storms, empty towers, a watch hitting single digits. Believe the footage. The Stranger left this city once. The nightmares sent him back. Your job is to cross it without donating your last canister to a fight you could have skipped.

When a surface slice ends, you want a hatch, not a highlight reel. Return to Sevastopolskaya or whatever hub the folio names, dump chemicals into filters, and only then talk about the view. Metro poetry is cheaper after you are underground.

  • Air — always on a timer; craft before the street, not on it.
  • Fauna — family hunters, some armored; AP reserved, not sprayed.
  • Interiors — pharmacies, hotels, post offices as loot boxes with teeth.
  • Light — necessary and suicidal; pulse it, do not leave it.
  • Politics — a promised homeland that still clicks on the Geiger.

Not in any cited preview. Treat open air as lethal without a seated filter.

+ Are nosalises confirmed?

Xbox Wire described bear-sized moles as series nosalises. Exact bestiary names may vary in the retail UI.

+ Is the nuclear winter over?

Copy says thaw has begun. Radiation and mutants have not clocked out. See survival.

+ Will there be vehicle sections?

Not in published 2039 gameplay. Exodus trains are not a confirmed 2039 toy. Assume walking.
