METRO 2039 Stealth
The Renegade trailer does not open on a firefight. It opens on a conversation in Sevastopolskaya, a man asking for information, and a station already described as plague-struck by the Novoreich. Stealth in METRO 2039 is how you enter a room that still has something you need. Combat is what happens after you fail that test.
Infiltration is the campaign grammar
4A Games posted the Renegade trailer from its own channel on 25 August 2026, the same night as gamescom Opening Night Live. The studio copy is explicit: The Stranger uses a mix of stealth and all-out combat to infiltrate a Novoreich-occupied Moscow. That is not flavour text. Preview writers at Xbox Wire, IGN and Screen Rant all came back talking about crouched approaches, isolated sentries and the cost of a noisy opener. If you only read the combat page, you will treat knives as a gimmick. They are the economy.
Xbox Wire compared a bandit hideout to Metal Gear Solid V: watch from cover, knife the isolated man, accept that the last third of a den may still go loud. IGN loved throwing knives because they drop a human silently and return from the corpse — and from the floor if you miss. In a game that charges metal for every crafted ball, a reusable blade is how stealth pays rent. Read weapons for the rest of the kit. Stay here for the posture.
There is no floating crosshair. You aim with iron or with whatever optic you crafted. That slows panic shots, which is the point. Hip-fire is a last resort, not a style. The controls page will take the exact bind once 4A publishes it. Until then, assume the series grammar: lean, look, throw, then decide if the room is still worth a round.
What Renegade actually shows
The official two-minute clip in the middle of this page is captured in-engine. It gives the first proper look at Sevastopolskaya as a lived hub: a shelter from the irradiated world above, and also a refuge already in the Fuhrer’s propaganda. A local says the Novoreich spread across the station like a plague. The Stranger is looking for someone. 4A will not name the target yet. Stealth is how you buy the next sentence of that hunt.
Watch the gun. It is down more often than a trailer usually allows. Watch fire, rain, and the watch glow stealing the lower frame. 4A is selling infiltration as atmosphere, not as a ghost ranking. When violence comes, it is close. That is the Shatun fantasy as much as it is a knife fantasy: a quiet tool until it is not.
Rules that survive a two-hour demo
Do not open on a family of mutants. Xbox Wire needed several deaths to drop the habit of shooting the first silhouette. Nosalis-scale moles hunt as a pack. Developer comments add armored hides and ammo types that matter. If a path exists around them, take it. That is stealth wearing a survival hat.
Human interiors are the stealth classroom. Light is a tell. The equipment UV and lighter are tools, not toys; Xbox Wire’s school room punished people who treated a beam like a flashlight app. Keep the pack on your back until the room is yours. A backpack-on-the-floor craft in a still-live den is how you donate a filter to a man with a shotgun.
When stealth breaks, leave. The folio on map notes will not draw a laser through the next courtyard. You pick the window, the dry floor, the hatch back to a hub. The filter timer does not pause because you got proud.
- Watch first, fire last — especially on the surface.
- Knives are reusable if you pick them up. Misses still cost time.
- Light is information you give away. Keep the beam down unless you are reading a wall.
- A loud opener taxes the whole floor. Budget AP and fire for the room you cannot walk around.
- Hubs like Sevastopolskaya are for talking and crafting, not for proving a loadout.

Frequently asked questions
+ Is METRO 2039 a stealth game?
It is a story FPS that mixes stealth, survival and close violence. Official copy and the Renegade trailer both say infiltration is part of the loop, not a difficulty toggle.
+ Do throwing knives stay after a miss?
IGN retrieved misses from the floor and kills from corpses. Treat them as a stealth economy, not as a thrown-away round. See items.
+ Is there a detection meter?
No published UI meter. Series habit is sound, light and line of sight. Do not wait for a ghost rank screen that has not been shown.
+ Should I stealth mutants the same way I stealth humans?
No. Pack hunters punish the first shot. Walk around if the folio allows it. Combat covers the loud tax.
