METRO 2039 Combat and Stealth
Combat in METRO 2039 is a budget. Every round you fire is a round you will not have for the fight you cannot walk around. Preview players who treated the surface like an arena got swarmed. Players who watched a room, threw a knife, and left with their magazine intact walked into the next Frozen Story still breathing.
Assume you are prey
Xbox Wire needed several deaths to drop the gamer instinct of “see monster, shoot monster.” Nosalis-scale moles on the first surface crossing hunt as a family. Developer comments add that mutants can be armored and that ammunition types matter against those hides. If a path exists around a pack, take it. That is not cowardice. That is the survival rule wearing a combat hat.
Human dens play closer to a stealth-action game. Xbox Wire compared the bandit hideout to Metal Gear Solid V: watch from bushes, knife the isolated sentry, accept that the last third will go loud. IGN loved throwing knives because they silently drop a human and then return to your hand from the corpse. Misses are retrievable too, which is a gift in a game that charges you for every metal ball.
There is no crosshair. You aim with the iron you have or the optic you crafted. That slows panic shots and makes hip-fire a last resort. If you want the gun list behind those sights, open weapons. If you want the attachment resource that feeds them, open crafting.
What the Renegade trailer actually shows
The video in the middle of this page is not a kill montage. It is Sevastopolskaya, a conversation about Novoreich as plague, then movement through station, tunnel and surface with the series mix of crouched walks and sudden violence. Watch for how often the gun is down. Watch for fire, rain, and the watch glow. 4A is telling you the combat fantasy is immersion, not a kill-feed.
Hunter himself does not jump out as a raid boss in the preview slices we have. He appears as posters, statues, a gravel-voiced training film ranting about Dark Ones. Killing his men is the combat you will actually play for hours. Kaban, named as a henchman, was the preview chase and was not at the first hideout. Expect hunts, not arenas.
Ammo types are a decision, not a drip
IGN listed metal balls, incendiary rounds and armor-piercing machine-gun rounds as craftable or findable types. 4A told interviewers that weapons and ammo are more or less effective depending on the target. Do not dump AP into unarmored rats. Do not throw fire into a room you still need to loot for filters.
Throwables exist to tilt a bad room. Knives are the economy play. Grenades, if they follow series form, are the “I have already been seen” play. Until a retail inventory screen exists, treat every throwable as rarer than it looks. The items page keeps the consumable list conservative on purpose.
Light discipline is combat. A flashlight that lets you see a stair also paints your chest for the man on the landing. Xbox Wire called the world dangerous and alive; the point of all the tactility is anxiety, not a museum tour. Pair this page with how to play so you do not enter a fight with a half filter and a wet floor.
- Scout a room from shadow before you tag the first body.
- Knives for humans, bullets for the thing that will not drop to a blade.
- Match ammo to armor. Save AP for the hide that shrugs off scrap.
- If a mutant family aggroes, break line of sight rather than spraying.
- Re-loot your own knives. The ground is a magazine.
When going loud is the correct tax
Stealth is not a morality meter in the footage we have. It is logistics. Some doors will pop. Some schools will stop being quiet. Some minibosses will stand in water and dare you to waste the last drum. Budget a loud minute: full magazine, a crafted filter, a medkit in the pouch, an exit picked before the first shot.
The Shatun appears in the Hunter reel as a new signature weapon. Do not build a personality cult around it until you have felt its ammo cost in a retail build. Use the weapons page for what is on camera, then come back here for the rule that outlives any gun: the cheapest fight is the one you did not take.

Frequently asked questions
+ Is stealth viable for the whole campaign?
Unknown. Previews support stealth into human spaces and evasion on the surface, with mandatory loud spikes. Plan for both; see how to play.
+ Do throwing knives break?
IGN retrieved blades from bodies and from the ground after misses. Durability is not published.
+ Is there a crosshair option?
Preview builds used weapon sights only. Accessibility toggles are TBA. Check controls after launch patches.
+ How do I fight armored mutants?
4A says ammo types and weapons matter against armored family members. Carry AP. Do not spend it on unarmored scouts.
